Bausch & Lomb announced that it is launching the Crystalens(R) AO, the first aberration-free accommodating intraocular lens (IOL) with aspheric optics, to cataract surgeons worldwide. The announcement follows the recent FDA approval of this newest Bausch & Lomb surgical product. The Crystalens AO, combined with the successful Crystalens HD and the Crystalens Five-0, will further establish Crystalens as the market leader in the premium IOL market.

A study conducted by a team lead by Dr. John Bullock of Wright State University’s Boonshoft School of Medicine found that improper temperature control of Bausch & Lomb’s ReNu with MoistureLoc may have contributed to the outbreak of a fungal infection of the cornea in 2008. The study was published in the peer-reviewed Archives of Ophthalmology.

The U.S. food and Drug Administration has approved safety labeling revisions for Bausch & Lomb, Inc.’s  Retisert (a fluocinolone acetonide intravitreal implant). The new labeling includes warnings based on the now available 3-year clinical reports. Use of the product can cause cataracts which require surgical removal in all phakic eyes within an average 3-year period. About 77% of patients will need drugs to lower intraocular pressure (IOP) within this period, and around 37% of patients may require filtering procedures for controlling elevated IOP.

The Vision Research Group at the Optometry Department at the Dublin Institute of Technology has joined forces with the Macular Pigment Research Group at the Waterford Institute of Technology to carry out a new research study into macular pigment and its relationship to visual performance and ocular health.

Dr James Loughman, lead scientist for the project at the Optometry Department in DIT, said the project, which has secured substantial funding from Enterprise Ireland and Bausch & Lomb and has seen the development of new state-of-the-art laboratories at each site, will examine the possible short and long-term visual benefits of macular pigment.
